Is It Time To Replace Your Air Conditioner? Know The Signs

A replacement of any appliance can be a difficult choice, unless of course you're forced to make the purchase as your old appliance has failed to work — then the decision is made for you. An appliance such as your air conditioner is a large and expensive piece of equipment, one that you don't want going out on you without any warning. If this occurs, you may be left scrambling to find the money for the purchase, all while being stuck without any cool air blowing through your home. Read on for signs that your air conditioning needs to be replaced before it stops working.

It's Older Than 15 Years

An aged appliance of any kind is a gamble. It's going to go out eventually, it's just a matter of when. If your appliance is older than 15 years, it's time to consider the idea of replacing your air conditioner. If your appliance is not having any issues at all, you can at least begin to start saving money for the appliance in your emergency fund (or start an emergency fund if you don't have one of those either). If you aren't sure of the age of your air conditioner, there is usually a tag somewhere on the appliance to indicate the age.

You Are Spending More Money On Repairs

If you are beginning to spend more and more money on repair costs to keep your appliance running properly, it may be time to replace the appliance altogether. Those repair costs can add up each season, and if you are spending more than what a new appliance would actually cost, you're wasting money. Spend the money up front for a brand new appliance and skip the repair costs.

Your Appliance Makes Unusual Noises

If your appliance is beginning to make noises that seem unusual, or the noises it makes when turning on or turning off just don't seem normal, it may be struggling a bit. Have your condensing unit cleaned and checked, if it's on the older side, it may need to be replaced. Those noises of struggle are only going to get worse if cleaning the system didn't do any good. Replace the unit before you're left in the sweltering heat.

These are just a few of the signs to watch for if you are considering replacing your air conditioner. Talk to a professional HVAC technician about whether or not it's best to repair, replace or stick with your old system for a little while longer.
